What Character AI actually is

The catalogue behaves like a library of personas rather than a single assistant. Each character carries a name, a backstory, and a speaking style built from sample dialogue, all supplied by its creator. Some imitate anime and video game figures. Others reconstruct historical people, and a large share are original inventions with no source material behind them. Every conversation opens with a reminder that responses are invented, which is the platform's own acknowledgment that these bots make things up.

Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas built the service in November 2021, after working on Google's LaMDA language model. Both returned to Google in August 2024 as part of a licensing arrangement, and the company has since operated independently under chief executive Karandeep Anand. That history matters for one practical reason: Google does not own the platform, despite a persistent assumption that it does. Using the Character AI app day to day

Both the Character AI web version and the mobile app share the same account and chat history, so a conversation started on a phone continues online in a laptop browser. The iOS build requires iOS 15.1 or later, weighs 220.5 MB, and ships in English plus 27 other languages. Chatting, calling, and generating images

Typing is the default mode. You send a message, the character replies in its own voice, and you can swipe through alternate responses if the first one misses. Building your own AI character

Creating one takes a form, not a codebase. You supply a name, a short greeting, and a description of the personality. Then come example exchanges that demonstrate how the character should speak, plus an avatar and, if you want one, a voice. Longer descriptions and richer example dialogue produce more consistent behaviour, because the model leans on that text every time it generates a reply. Finding characters worth talking to

Character AI discovery runs on three surfaces. Search matches names and descriptions, category pages group characters by genre, and Community Feed presents a scrollable stream of Characters, Scenes, Streams, and creator videos that you can react to, follow, or open into a chat without leaving it. Two limits on that last surface are easy to miss: Feed exists only in the mobile app, and it has not launched in every market, so the browser version shows nothing comparable.

Characters that breach the community guidelines get labelled Restricted Access, and nobody else can start a chat with them. A dead-looking character you reached through search or a shared link is usually restricted rather than deleted.

Free access, c.ai+, and Charms

Chatting costs nothing, and the free tier is supported by advertising. Two paid layers sit on top. The c.ai+ subscription is priced at $9.99 per month or $94.99 per year in the US App Store, and removes ads while adding priority access during busy periods. Character AI login and age verification

Character AI requires an account. There is no anonymous mode and no guest chat, and no workaround exists despite the volume of searches asking for one. Sign-in runs through email or a linked Google or Apple account. How the age check works

Character.AI published an unusually specific description of its process. Age assurance runs automatically on every account, drawing on login information, on-platform activity, and third-party signals. Accounts that clear it are never prompted for anything. If the system reads an account as under 18 and the holder disagrees, verification moves to a selfie handled by Persona, an outside provider. Only when a person cannot confirm adulthood from that selfie does an ID upload enter the picture. Character.AI states it never receives or stores those documents, and that Persona retains them for one week. Age estimation is imprecise by design, so adults occasionally get caught by it.

What under-18 accounts kept

The November 2025 announcement removed free-form conversation for minors, not the account itself. Existing chats stay readable and previously generated images and videos remain saved. The creation tools also continue to function, covering characters, scenes, voices, and Imagine Chat. Feed access survived as well, including stickers and reactions. During the transition it throttled minors to two hours of chat per day, and apologised to them in the announcement.

Why old and beta links no longer work

Searches for old Character AI and beta Character AI remain heavy, and both now lead nowhere. The company retired the beta site on September 24, 2024 and now directs everyone to the current web app or mobile app. Chats made on the old interface were not lost, but the interface itself is gone, and no mirror or workaround restores it.

Is Character AI down, or is something else wrong?

Outages get reported constantly, and most reports turn out to be something narrower. There is a complication here that other guides miss: the company's own status page has been switched off. Its help centre still links to one, but that address now returns a notice saying the page is inactive and viewable only by team members. No official uptime feed exists for Character AI at the moment, so a genuine incident has to be identified from third-party outage trackers or from the community subreddit instead.

Once a platform-wide AI character chat failure is ruled out, the usual culprits are a stale app version, a corrupted cache, or filtering on a school or workplace connection. Searches for an unblocked mirror lead nowhere useful, since no official alternative address exists. What the chat filter permits

A moderation layer sits between the model and every reply, and it has been the platform's most contested feature since launch. Explicit sexual content is not permitted with any character, in text chat or in voice calls, and no subscription changes that. Paying for c.ai+ buys speed and ad removal, not looser moderation, a distinction that catches out subscribers who assumed otherwise.

Moderation operates on generated output rather than on intent, which produces its familiar inconsistency: a scene may run for several exchanges and then hit a wall, or a reply may be blocked while a near-identical one passes. Romantic and dramatic roleplay is broadly allowed within those limits. Clearing the adult age check restores open-ended chat, not NSFW output, which is the single most misread part of the 2025 policy change. The app rating split nobody explains

Here is a discrepancy worth knowing before you download anything. The two store listings for the same app disagree on almost everything measurable. That gap is not a rendering quirk, and it has nothing to do with how well text chat or voice calls perform. It reflects the volume and recency of Android reviews written after the 2026 advertising rollout, and Play surfaces recent sentiment far more aggressively than the App Store does.

Free AI character chat is what both listings advertise, yet the age labels contradict each other outright. Store rating systems are independent of each other and of the company's own policy, so neither number describes who is actually permitted to chat.

Alternatives and apps like Character AI

Interest in Character AI alternatives climbed sharply after the under-18 restriction and the advertising changes. Apple's own “you might also like” panel maps the category well enough, listing PolyBuzz, Sakura, Kindroid, SynClub, and BALA AI. Rivals differ along three axes worth checking before you switch: how strict the moderation is, who builds the character library, and how far memory persists.

Several competing apps promise no sign-up and no limits in their listings while still requiring an account and still screening output. Treat those promises as marketing until tested.

Yes, and the Play Store description still advertises unlimited conversations and voice calls at no cost. Is Character AI safe?

There is one official listing per platform: App Store ID 1671705818 and the Android package ai.character.app, both published under the developer name Character.AI. Modified APK builds circulate outside those two listings. They are repackaged by third parties, carry no relationship to the company, and cannot be verified.

Do characters remember previous conversations?

Partly. Recall works within a single conversation and degrades as it grows long, so the promise that bots adapt to you across chats overstates it. How do you delete an account?

Deletion runs through settings on web or mobile, and Google's data-safety listing confirms users can request erasure of collected data. Removing the app from a phone does not close the account or delete anything stored server-side.
